Windows vs Apple, blu-ray envy
Microsoft is swinging at Apple again with this new commercial featuring a Windows 7 laptop showing Avatar on a blu-ray disc and a jealous MacBook looking from the side. In countries such as Sweden it sure can be painful that there’s no Apple computer with a blu-ray player available – since you can’t rent any movies through iTunes. But in other countries where you can rent HD movies the problem is much smaller. I use a Mac mini as the center of my home entertaiment system and it sure is a shame that I need to have a blu-ray player as well. I definitely see why Apple want to skip this step and move directly to streaming media, but we’re not there yet.

Sony BDP-S360 and BDP-S560
Today Sony announced the two new stand-alone blu-ray players BDP-S360 and BDP-S560. Both models support 7.1 HD sound (Dolby® TrueHD, Dolby® Digital Plus, DTS®-HD High Resolution Audio, and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding), deep color video output, USB flash storage device. The big difference between the two players is that the BDP-S560 also features a front USB port, and built-in WiFi for BD-live material and automatic firmware updates. The players will be shipping this summer and will retail for about $300 (BDP-S360) and $350 (BDP-S560).

TV with built-in blu-ray player
I would personally prefer a cheaper TV without a built-in PC or blu-ray player, but it’s still really interesting to see all these new machines hitting the market in a rapid pace. The Allio PCTV comes with a built-in home theater PC including a blu-ray drive. The flagship model is $2799…

Standalone Blu-ray drops
If you look at the sales figures showing how many standalone blu-ray players that have been sold the last couple of months, you can see that the sales figures have dropped almost 40% between January and March – and that is quite a surprise since at least I expected to see a dramatic increase when the format war ended. It will be really interesting to see how long it will take until standalone blu-ray players reach the price level of around $100…
